500 years of the first circumnavigation of history: The return to the world of Magellan and Elcano in figures.
500 years have passed since the return to the most important world, starring a Spaniard and a Portuguese, and we continue discovering things we did not know about this event.
This is the first circumnavigation around the land that featured two sailors, the Portuguese Fernando de Magallanes and the Spanish Juan Sebastián Elcano. A tour that began when on August 10, 1519, five ships left Seville to find the route from America to the Moluccas of Indonesia in search of spices, which was approved by King Carlos I of Spain. They crossed the Pacific Ocean that had never been crossed before and that ended with the return of a single ship on September 8, 1522.
The number of men who set sail is unclear. According to sources, it ranges between 239 and 260, but what is certain is that only 18 returned. Along the way, many died of hunger and diseases such as scurvy. Others in wars such as the one killed by the mission captain, Fernando de Magallanes.
They calculated that the crossing was going to last two years and to feed the men they loaded 500 tons of provisions. (CURIOSITIES: 200 boats of sardines, 430 heads of garlic and 10,000 kilos of dry biscuits. And to be able to drink milk I had on board seven live cows).
- Five ships of 75 to 120 tons left Cádiz in 1519 but only one, Victoria, returned three years later commanded by Elcano.
The two main protagonists of this adventure were the captains Magallanes and Elcano although for different reasons, Elcano was always in the shade despite being the survivor of the expedition. This was for various reasons.
Magellan if considered a historical character. Expert navigator, forecaster and calculator, lost his life in an absurd skirmish a step away from the glory he deserved for his feat. He died without finishing the trip he had designed, it is said that for defending his illegitimate son in a battle. His body was never recovered, his diary was never found and there was no one left to claim his feat.
